Health Care in Malta is generally quite good. The largest hospital is the Mater Dei, which is a very good hospital in most
aspects; although - as with most of the Maltese hospitals - the wait is often long.

If you pay income tax in Malta the health care system takes care of you and treatment is free. You must bring a copy of
your last paycheck to the hospital to validate your residency. Furthermore you will need a piece of ID.

If you don't have enough trust in the public hospitals, there are alternatives. Private practitioners are placed all around the
island, usually on top of- or near a pharmacy.

A basic check up, prescription etc. is normally around €20.

In addition there's the St. James chain of private owned hospitals with four hospitals in Malta, each specialized in different
categories. They are very professional, and both fast and efficient.

If you're lucky enough to have health care benefits included in your work contract or privately, this will cover all conditions of
sickness or injury expenses. Please read the insurance section for further details.

Should one require other types of surgery, a visit to St. Phillips would be in order, as they are specialized in taking care of
everything from hip replacement to cosmetic surgery.
